Data Allowance

So What Are Data Allowances?

Beginning January 1, 2019, each Ritter Communications residential cable internet plan will come with a pre-set amount of data per 30-day period. Each internet plan will include a speed amount (how fast the internet flows at your home) and a data allowance (how much data can be used in a certain time)

So What Does This Mean For Me?

Our customers use an average of approximately 300 gigabytes (GB) of data per billing period, and our smallest package in our new plan contains 500 GB. So most of our customers won’t be impacted by the changes. In fact, 90% of our customers won’t have to change their habits at all, but everyone will benefit from a better internet experience thanks to these changes.

How Will It Benefit Me?

A small number of extreme users are consuming more than their share of data, which slows down the network for everyone else.  To accommodate these extreme users, we have to divert network resources that could be used to improve everyone’s experience. The extreme users who are clogging the network may be incentivized to change their usage patterns, which will protect our ability to provide good service to everyone. Just like your water or electric bill, the people who use more data will be charged more, and we can redirect network resources in ways that will improve everyone’s experience.

Why is Ritter Communications implementing data plans?

With the use of internet in the household increasing year over year, we have to put practices in place to protect the network so there is enough data available for everyone. There’s a limited amount of data any network can handle, and data plans will ensure a better internet experience for everyone. A very small number of excessive users consume a large chunk of the data on our network, and that slows down the experience for everyone else. In fact, more than 90% of our customers will be unaffected by our changes.

What is "Internet Usage"?

Internet usage refers to all of the traffic or data that travels through a customer's cable modem. (Traditional cable television does not travel through a cable modem.) The data travelling through a cable modem is measured in Gigabytes (GB).

What causes high internet usage?

Activity drives usage. Some activities - like sending an email or posting a photo on social media - require a very small amount of data. Others – like streaming a high-definition movie or playing video games on the internet - use more data.

Some activity might be happening without your knowledge. For instance: a virus or "spyware" application might have infected your computer and started transmitting data without your knowledge. Or someone else might be using your internet connection without your permission. To help guard against these and other potential causes of high usage, please consider the following steps.

  • Make sure your Wi-Fi connection is password protected. The more people that have access to your connection, the more data is going to be used. In addition to limiting security issues that can arise from having an open network, you’ll use less data if only a few people can use your connection rather than your entire neighborhood. If you have a Ritter Communications issued router, your technician put a password on your Wi-Fi network during your installation. If you aren’t utilizing Ritter Communications equipment, see your manufacturer’s website for instructions to set up a password for it.
  • Adjust the resolution of your streaming apps. If you regularly stream video, apps like Netflix or Hulu allow you to adjust your resolution quality to pull data at a lower rate. You can do this by accessing the settings menu on those apps. When using apps like YouTube, choose standard definition feeds over high definition ones when available. Standard definition feeds use much less data. This is a good tip if you’re only watching videos for the music. Here’s an example of where to click in the Youtube app to lower the video quality.
  • Update your antivirus and security software to ensure that it is up to date. You may be unaware of viruses or spyware that are constantly running and generating excessive internet use. By installing the latest security software, you can eliminate problems that you don’t even know exist.
  • Make sure devices are being used while streaming, and turn your streaming off when you’re finished watching. How often do you turn on a TV show for your child, only to have them drop the tablet and move on to another activity moments later? If you’re aware of those instances you can turn off the device so it’s not running while no one is watching. Many times, turning the television set off does not turn off the streaming device, so video continues streaming even when the television is off!

Will unused gigabytes roll over, like cell phone plans?

No. Data plans reset each billing period, which improves the experience for everyone. If we allowed our customers to rollover data and use a surplus amount in a later month, the additional traffic in the heavy months would cause congestion and negatively impact the experience for all customers. The purpose of implementing data plans is to protect our network to create a better user experience for all of our customers.

When will I be billed for overages?

If you go over your data plan, you will be charged for excess use on your next billing cycle. Your usage is billed in arrears because until your billing cycle ends, we can’t determine how much data you used during that period. At the end of the billing cycle, we can accurately measure what you used during that time and bill you accordingly on your next statement.

To see the dates that correspond with your billing cycle login to our online billing portal by clicking here.  In the left hand column, click “Internet Usage.”

Do other internet service providers implement data plans?

Yes. This has been an industry standard for several years. Compared to many other internet service providers (ISPs), our packages are generous. In many cases, our customers are receiving 25% more data per month than our competitors offer their customers.

How does the internet really work?

To better understand how the internet is used within a household with multiple people accessing it, watch this video.

I didn’t receive an email telling me I was over my data allowance. Why was I still charged for an extra 50GB of data?

As a courtesy, we send notification emails when customers have used 75%, 85%, 95% and 100% of their data allowance, but it is up to each customer to keep up with their use. If you didn’t receive an alert email, please contact our Customer Care team to make sure we have your preferred email address on file.

Will uploaded materials count toward my data allowance or do only downloaded items?

All data usage that passes through your modem counts towards your data allowance, so both upload and download contribute to your data allowance.  When you login to your Ritter Communications account on our billing site, you can view how much data you’ve used each billing period. The internet usage tab breaks data down by upload and download, so you can see a breakdown between the two.

How can I increase my data plan?

You can increase your data plan by clicking here or by calling a Customer Care Representative at 888-336-4466. We do offer an unlimited data option to our 100 Mbps customers for an additional rate. Contact us for pricing and eligibility information.
